What Makes A Good Backpack: Part 2
Part 2 continues guide to finding your perfect backpack. We previously explored the basics in choosing the size and type of backpack for your daily carry. If you missed part 1, find it here.
Today, why stitching matters, and the low down on materials.
Tip #4: Skin & Bones
Most bags are simply materials stitched up with threading or welding; It’s HOW they’re put together affects everything. Here’s what to look for:
Materials: Materials make or break a bag! Good ones are made for abrasion resistance, tear proofing, and if you’re in wetter climates, some degree of waterproofing coating.
Quality in material can vary wildly, even if they look the similar. So when in doubt, choose a fabric from a brand with reputable source, such as CORDURA’s branded nylons (look for the tag). For an in-depth explanation in all things fabric, check out Carryology’s write up.
Stitching: Stitches keep the bags together, and the best are nylon threads reinforced in places carrying weight (such as shoulder straps). Body fabric can be patched up, but a broken strap is irreparable, so before buying, do a quick peep test:
Pry the strap and top panel gently apart until you can see the stitching — good bags have reinforced ends with a bartack (zig-zag) stitch near the edges.
*Loose thread-ends usually won’t affect durability, unless you’re able to pull the whole thread out.
Zips & Hardware: Good zips are both immensely satisfying, bad zips are a constant struggle. Run the zips fully from one end to the other; if you feel a kink, it could be a sign the teeth are misaligned. Never force a stuck zipper! Backtrack gently and try again. Some zipper lining (the material that ties the teeth to main body) will be more waterproof and slightly harder to pull, so consider your needs. Carryology with the lowdown on zips here.
